Partner
Marie-Claude Cantin has been a member of Lavery’s Litigation Group since 1990. Her practice is focused on Civil Litigation and Insurance Law including insurance coverage issues. She also focuses on Construction Law and Professional Liability especially for sustainable development projects. Other areas of Ms. Cantin’s practice include Product Liability and Commercial Litigation. In Product Liability matters, she is mandated by insurers and manufacturers from Canada and elsewhere.
She has extensive experience representing clients in complex matters before the civil courts and in alternative dispute resolution methods such as mediation.
Ms. Cantin is also recognized in the 2010, 2011 and 2012 editions of The Best Lawyers in Canada in the field of Insurance Law.
Representative work
- She has represented many insurers in major fire cases acting for subrogated insurers and for defendant insurers.
- She has represented an insurer before the Court of Appeal to obtain a ruling allowing insurers, henceforth, to involve, by forced intervention, third parties potentially liable for a claim, even if the insurer had denied its insured’s claim.
Professional and community activities
- She has served on the Executive Committee of the Canadian Bar Association’s Insurance Law and Civil Litigation Section.
- She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Young Bar Association of Montreal.
- She has been a mentor to many lawyers in the Litigation Group.
- She is called upon by the Quebec Bar to act as Arbitrator for accounts arbitration.
