Mr. Payne is a partner in the Litigation and Conflict Resolution Group. He has been in private practice for almost 40 years, his primary areas of practice being professional liability, general insurance, life and disability insurance, and media law (defamation and invasion of privacy). Mr. Payne is recommended by his peers, and also serves as arbitrator in a variety of disputes.
Mr. Payne has always worked closely with Barreau du Québec. He has defended lawyers in professional liability actions for 20 years as counsel for the Barreau’s Professional Liability Insurance Fund. He has also represented the Barreau or its Assistant Syndics in a number of cases.
Mr. Payne has represented professional clients, primarily lawyers and pharmacists, in proceedings before disciplinary boards.
He advises and represents board members and officers in cases relating to judicial review of student expulsions and academic decisions, in particular.
Mr. Payne has been involved in inquests and inquiries conducted by the Coroner’s Office and the Lobbyists Commissioner.
His work representing media outlets in civil cases has made him a go-to resource for crisis management.
