  3. Lavery is proud to support the next generation in Montreal’s Chinese business community

    Lavery was a proud sponsor of the fifth edition of the scholarship presentation gala of the Jiu Ding Club, which took place on April 30, 2016. Montréal’s Jiu Ding (JD) Club is a non-profit organization founded by a group of entrepreneurs and professionals of Chinese origin living and working in Greater Montreal. During the ceremony, the JD Club presented scholarships to students in Quebec’s Chinese community as well as international students from Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong who study here and have distinguished themselves through their contributions to all sectors of Canadian society: social, professional, and political, etc. Guillaume Lavoie, partner at Lavery who counts many companies and entrepreneurs in Montreal’s Chinese business community among his clients, was there to represent the firm at the event.

  4. André Vautour and Guillaume Lavoie to give workshop on investment funds at the Barreau du Québec’s conference on recent developments in business law

    On June 3, 2016 at Montreal’s Intercontinental Hotel, André Vautour, the firm’s chairman of the board and a partner who practises particularly in investment funds and Guillaume Lavoie, a partner whose practice focuses on private equity and venture capital, will give a workshop entitled “Sword of Damocles or Scarecrow? To what extent can an investor in an investment fund get involved in the management of the fund without risking of losing its limited liability?” (“Épée de Damoclès ou épouvantail? Jusqu'où l'investisseur dans un fonds d'investissement peut s'impliquer dans ce fonds sans risquer de perdre sa responsabilité limitée?”) at the Barreau du Québec’s conference “Recent developments in business law (2016)” (“Les développements récents en droit des affaires (2016)”). They’ll touch on, among other topics, the issue of the potential liability of investors in private investment funds and will explain to what extent the setting up of an advisory committee made up of partners’ representatives or the conclusion of side letters is likely to make them lose their limited liability.   5. Lavery proud to pursue its tradition of contribution to the development of entrepreneurship by supporting Fondation Montréal inc.

    Lavery, through its Lavery GO inc. Program and Lavery Capital group makes an aggregate $25,000 donation ($5,000 annually over five years) to Fondation Montréal inc., while supplying the services of five volunteer-lawyers to act as coaches over the same period. In addition to Guillaume Lavoie, a business law partner, and Louis Charette, a litigation partner at Lavery, both long time volunteers at the Fondation, the following lawyers will lend a hand to the Fondation’s initiatives, which include supporting start-up businesses and awarding grants to new entrepreneurs: Nicolas Joubert, labour, employment and immigration law partner; Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur, labour and employment law partner; and Judith Houle-Couture, business law associate.   6. Guillaume Lavoie, Young Bar of Montreal Lawyer of the year in Corporate Law

  9. Étienne Brassard, Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur, Guillaume Lavoie and Jonathan Warin appointed partners at Lavery

    Lavery is pleased to announce the appointment of Étienne Brassard, Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur, Guillaume Lavoie and Jonathan Warin as partners of the firm. Étienne Brassard practises business law with the firm and is a member of the Private Financing Group. His main areas of practice are business finance, banking law and commercial law and, in particular, the negotiation and drafting of credit, the related movable and immovable security agreements, as well as the documentation required for lease financing and installment sales. He has also acted in several major crossborder syndicated and non-syndicated financings during his practice, or relating to specific assets such as aircraft financing, rolling stock and heavy machinery. He is also the Lavery Go inc. Program Coordinator. Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur has particular expertise in the areas of labour and employment law, health law and the law of occupational health and safety. She pleads before administrative tribunals and courts of law, particularly the Commission des lésions professionnelles. She also acts as an employer spokesperson for collective agreements. Guillaume Lavoie practises in private equity, venture capital and securities law and mergers and acquisitions. He acts as a legal advisor to various Canadian and foreign corporations and private equity and venture capital funds in connection with asset purchases and sales and the acquisition of public and private corporations. He has extensive experience with respect to international transactions.
