Josiane L’Heureux elected at the Board of Directors of CACE
Josiane L’Heureux, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the Canadian Association of Counsel to Employers (CACE) during CACE’s annual conference that took place in Calgary from September 14 to 16, 2017. Once again, Lavery was well represented at the Conference, as Brittany Carson, Zeïneb Mellouli and Guy Lavoie were in attendance. Guy Lavoie was a member of the organizing committee of the Conference, and he chaired the very last panel of the Conference. CACE regroups approximately 1,300 management-side lawyers in Labour and Employment Law from all Canadian provinces.

Élodie Brunet and Zeïneb Mellouli speakers at the 2017 Ordre des CRHA HR convention
On September 27, Élodie Brunet and Zeïneb Mellouli, respectively a lawyer and a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, will speak at the 2017 Ordre des CRHA HR convention being held at the Palais des congrès de Montréal. Together with Dr. Yves Lamontagne, they will participate in a multidisciplinary panel entitled Gestion de la santé mentale : entretien avec un psychiatre. Guy Lavoie elected Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers
Guy Lavoie, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, was elected a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers during a meeting held on June 10 by the governors of this prestigious association. He will be officially inducted on November 11, 2017, in Washington. This distinction is awarded to Labour lawyers who distinguish themselves through their sustained contributions and performances in this area of practice and meet the highest standards of integrity, professional and excellence.

Marie-Josée Hétu speaks at the 2017 RQSISQ Symposium
On June 16, Marie-Josée Hétu, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, spoke at the 2017 Symposium of the Regroupement des directeurs des services d’incendies et de secours du Québec (RQSISQ), held at the Hotel Le Dauphin in Drummondville on June 15-16. Approximately twenty directors, officers, and managers working in various fire and rescue services across the province attended the conference, at which employee behaviour outside work, the duty of loyalty, and the use of social media were discussed.

Lavery holds a labour and employment symposium in Drummondville
The Drummondville edition of Lavery’s Major Symposium on Labour and Employment Law was held on June 15 at the Centrexpo Cogeco Drummondville. Participants attended various workshops facilitated by Jean Boulet, Danielle Gauthier and Carl Lessard. The speakers discussed a variety of subjects, including recent developments in labour law, managing employees with difficult behaviour or in psychological distress, and renegotiating collective agreements.

The Sherbrooke edition of Lavery’s Major Symposium on Labour and Employment Law was held on June 14 at the Delta Hotel. Participants attended various workshops facilitated by Dave Bouchard, Geneviève Chamberland and Danielle Gauthier. The speakers discussed a variety of subjects, including how to successfully terminate an employment, recent developments in labour law, and managing violent behaviour and threats in the workplace.

Lavery’s Montréal 2017 Major Symposium on Labour and Employment Law an unqualified success
Lavery’s 2017 Major Symposium on Labour and Employment Law held in Montréal was an unqualified success. About 500 people attended the event held June 7 at the Centre Mont-Royal to learn about recent developments in this area. The symposium was hosted by Nicolas Joubert and Guy Lavoie, partners of the Labour and Employment Law group. Participants also attended a number of workshops facilitated by Dave Bouchard, Élodie Brunet, Nicolas Courcy, Marie-Hélène Jolicoeur, Carl Lessard, Josiane L’Heureux, Zeïneb Mellouli and Véronique Morin. The speakers addressed a variety of subjects, including best practices when hiring and terminating employment, managing employees with difficult behaviour or in psychological distress, telework and renegotiating a collective agreement.

Marie-Josée Hétu speaks to the Réseau RH de Drummondville
On May 10, Marie-Josée Hétu, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, spoke at an event organized by the RH Réseau de Drummondville (HR network). Approximately thirty human resources managers attended the breakfast seminar, where key labour and employment law cases from the past year and recent legislative developments were reviewed.

Nicolas Joubert speaks at the Éditions Yvon Blais Colloque Santé et sécurité du travail
Nicolas Joubert, a partner of the Labour and Employment Law group, spoke at the Colloque Santé et sécurité du travail (Occupational Health and Safety Colloquium) organized by Éditions Yvon Blais and held on May 11 in Québec City. Entitled La surveillance et la filature des travailleurs absents à la suite d’un accident de travail : les bonnes pratiques et les pièges à éviter, the presentation addressed the legal framework surrounding these sensitive issues. Me Joubert also reviewed recent jurisprudence and highlighted best practices and pitfalls to avoid. A second edition of the colloquium will be held in Montréal this coming December 7. Lavery holds a seminar on employee addiction problems
On April 5, in collaboration with Cyclone Santé, Lavery held a seminar entitled Les problèmes de toxicomanie chez les employés : agir pour éviter le pire ! (Employee Addition Problems: Act to Avoid The Worst-Case Scenario) which took place at Lavery’s Conference Centre in Montréal. During this seminar, which was attended by close to one hundred participants, Christiane Legault, Vice-President, Corporate Health at Cyclone Santé, spoke to the participants about various drugs and their effects. Zeïneb Mellouli, a lawyer in our Labour and Employment Law Group, also discussed the practical and legal aspects of managing employees with alcohol and drug abuse problems.

Élodie Brunet gives a presentation on mental health in the workplace for future CRHA and CRIA
On March 8, 2017, Élodie Brunet, a lawyer in the Labour and Employment Law group, was a speaker at the industrial relations week organized by the future CRHA and CRIA at the Université de Montréal jointly with the Ordre des CRHA. The presentation was an opportunity for students to learn more about the practical and legal aspects of managing mental health in the workplace.
