  1. Lavery, de Billy welcomes a new partner in Labour and Employment Law

    Lavery, de Billy is pleased to announce that Guy Lavoie has joined the firm as a partner and member of its Labour and Employment Law Group. Mr. Lavoie will practise in the firm's Montreal offices. Called to the Quebec Bar in 1986, Mr. Lavoie was previously with a national firm, where his practice was focused on labour and employment law.Mr Lavoie has extensive expertise and experience in labour and employment law and occupational health and safety. He will advise the firm’s clients and represent them before various administrative tribunals in labour relations and employment law matters, occupational health and safety, discrimination and harassment. He will also work in conjunction with the firm’s Business Law Group on the full range of labour and employment law issues related to mergers and acquisitions.Mr. Lavoie has been listed as a recommended lawyer since 2002 in the Labour and Employee Benefits Handbook published by the Practical Law Company of London, in the United Kingdom.

  3. Lavery, de Billy welcomes a new labour and employment lawyer

    Lavery, de Billy is pleased to welcome Valérie Korozs, attorney, to its Labour and Employment Law Group in the firm's Montreal offices. Called to the Quebec Bar in 2004, Ms. Korozs worked previously with Stikeman Elliott L.L.P., where her practice focused on labour and employment law.Ms. Korozs will advise the firm’s clients and represent them before the courts and administrative tribunals in labour relations and individual employment law matters, occupational health and safety, and human rights and freedoms. She will also work closely with the firm’s Business Law Group on the full range of labour and employment law issues involved in various corporate transactions.A graduate of the Université de Montréal in 2003, Ms. Korozs has participated in numerous moot court competitions. She was a member of the winning team that was awarded first prize in the Gale Cup Moot Competition in 2003, and represented Canada at the Commonwealth Moot Competition in Australia in the same year. In 2004, she won the prize for best pleader as a member of the Montreal Bar School team at the Jean-Pictet international moot court competition held in France. In 2002, she also completed an introductory program on the Chinese legal system at the China University of Political Science and Law in Beijing.

  4. A Lavery, de Billy Partner named Rising Star by Lexpert

  8. Lavery represents the Quebec Railway Corporation Inc. in sale of Railway Subsidiaries to CN and Logistec Corporation

    On November 1, 2008, the Canadian National Railway Company acquired the three principal railway subsidiaries of the Quebec Railway Corporation Inc. and its rail-freight ferry operation for an aggregate purchase price of $C49.8 million. Prior to such transaction, Logistec Corporation and Logistec Stevedoring (Atlantic) Inc. acquired from the Quebec Railway Corporation Inc. all of the shares and inter-company debt of Sydney Coal Railway Inc. for an aggregate net cash disbursement estimated at $C11 million. The Quebec Railway Corporation Inc. was represented in all the transactions by Lavery with a team led by André Vautour and that included Jean-Sébastien Desroches, Sarah Talpis-Guillet, Jamil Chammas (corporate) and Dominique Bélisle (financial services).

The Lavery, de Billy team was composed of Marc Rochefort, Michel Servant and Guillaume Lavoie (corporate/securities), and Philip Nolan (tax).On October 14, 2008, Gaz Métro inc. announced the closing of its $150 million of 5.40% Series L First Mortgage Bonds (the “Series L Bonds”) guaranteed by Gaz Métro Limited Partnership (“Gaz Métro”).The dealers’ syndicate was led by BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc., and included Desjardins Securities Inc., National Bank Financial Inc., Scotia Capital Inc., CIBC World Markets Inc., RBC Dominion Securities Inc., TD Securities Inc., Laurentian Bank Securities Inc. and Casgrain & Company Limited.The Series L Bonds, bearing interest at the rate of 5.40% per annum, will mature on April 15, 2013. Standard & Poor’s Rating Services and DBRS Limited have each assigned an “A” rating to the Series L Bonds.Gaz Métro is a leading Quebec energy company and one of Canada’s largest natural gas distributors. Gaz Métro serves some 171,000 customers through an underground pipeline network of almost 10,000 km.
