  1. Lavery helps to establish an affordable housing fund worth $151 million

    On May 4, 2021, the Government of Canada, the Government of Québec, the Fonds de solidarité FTQ and Ivanhoé Cambridge announced the formation of a consortium of investors that will make $120 million available to co-ops, non-profit organizations (NPOs) and housing agencies for the construction or renovation of affordable housing. The Lucie and André Chagnon Foundation, Fondaction, the Mirella and Lino Saputo Foundation and the J. Armand Bombardier Foundation collectively added $31 million to the sum. The strategic partnership will be managed by the Association des groupes de ressources techniques du Québec (AGRTQ) starting in the fall of 2021.  Lavery Lawyers advised and assisted the project partners with the drafting and implementation of the legal structure and documentation necessary to create and start up the consortium of investors. Lavery is pleased to have put its expertise and professional and financial resources to work for the project, and to thereby contribute to an initiative that benefits both families and the economic vitality of Quebec. The Lavery team, led by Brigitte Gauthier, was composed of Jean-Sébastien Desroches, Jean-François Maurice, François Renaud, Bernard Trang and André Vautour.

    Lavery is pleased to announce the arrival of Béatrice Bilodeau.   Béatrice Bilodeau Béatrice Bilodeau is a member of the Litigation and Dispute Resolution group and her practice focuses primarily in real estate and commercial litigation. She regularly pleads before all Quebec civil and administrative tribunals, particularly in the context of injunctive remedies.

  4. Lavery finalist in two 2021 Canadian Law Awards categories

    On March 16, Lexpert announced the Excellence Awardees for this year’s edition of the Canadian Law Awards, recognizing the leadership and expertise of law firms and legal professionals.  After being named Quebec Law Firm of the Year in 2020, Lavery is a finalist in the following two categories for the second year in a row: Quebec Law Firm of the Year Managing Partner of the Year, Anik Trudel, Chief Executive Officer Once again, these nominations, along with the hard work that went into earning them, further strengthen Lavery’s position as a leader in the Quebec legal services industry.

  5. Simon Gagné appointed to the QMJHL Players Help Committee

    On October 30, 2020, Simon Gagné, Head of practice of our Labour and Employment Law group, was appointed to the committee that the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) has created to update and improve its Players Help Program. As a former QMJHL player, Simon will use his expertise to develop lasting solutions that will not only help players, but also parents, coaches, and general managers with the daily challenges that come with the sport. The other committee members are: -          François Bernier, retired SPVM police officer, resource person for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada -          Patrice Bernier, TVA Sports soccer analyst and former Montreal CF assistant coach -          François Boisvert, special education teacher at Clinique Syna-Psy, resource person for the Shawinigan Cataractes -          Sylvain Croteau, General Manager of Sport’Aide -          Sylvain Guimond, sports psychologist, speaker and author of many books -          Isabelle Leclaire, head of sport d’excellence and head coach of Carabins women’s hockey at Université de Montréal.

  6. Lexpert Recognizes Two Partners as Leading Technology Lawyers in Canada

    On February 19, 2021, Lexpert recognized the expertise of two of our partners in its 2021 Lexpert Special Edition: Technology. Chantal Desjardins and André Vautour now rank among Canada’s leaders in the area of technology law. Chantal Desjardins is a partner, lawyer and trade-mark agent in Lavery’s intellectual property group. She contributes actively to the development of her clients’ rights in this field, which includes the protection of trade-marks, industrial designs, copyright, trade secrets, domain names and other related forms of intellectual property, in order to promote her clients’ business goals.   André Vautour practices in the fields of corporate and commercial law and is particularly interested in corporate governance, strategic alliances, joint ventures, investment funds and mergers and acquisitions of private corporations. He practises also in the field of technology law (drafting technology development and transfer agreements, licensing agreements, distribution agreements, outsourcing agreements, and e-commerce agreements).

  7. Lexpert recognizes Louis Charette’s expertise in aviation

    On February 12, 2021, Lexpert named Louis Charette as one of the leading lawyers working with the aviation industry in Canada. Louis Charette is a partner and practises in civil and professional liability litigation, product liability, transportation law and infrastructure as well as aviation law. Mr. Charette defends manufacturers, distributors, and vendors. He also advises manufacturers in the implementation and management of recalls and on strategic and risk management issues. His expertise is sought after in complex litigation involving multiple defendants and jurisdictions and in class actions defence.

  8. Lavery hires five articling students as lawyers

    We are pleased to welcome Justine Beauchesne in Quebec City, Stéphanie Dubois, Gabrielle Mathieu, Gabriella Settino and Clémence Trudeau as associates on the Lavery team.   Justine Beauchesne joins the Business Law group. Before beginning her law studies, Justine completed two years of studies at Université Laval in Public Affairs and International Relations. During her Bachelor of Laws, she did a semester at the University of Strasbourg, where she was able to study international law and become familiar with French law.   Stéphanie Dubois joins the Business Law group. Stéphanie Dubois joined the Lavery team as a student in May 2019. She has completed her Bachelor of Civil Law at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) with honors and also holds a certificate in labour law.   Gabrielle Mathieu joins the Conflict and Resolution group. She holds a bachelor degree in law from the Université de Montréal. During her studies, she was involved in the Women and Law Committee as well as in the Mediation Clinic of the Université de Montréal. She also assisted two judges of the Superior Court during a one-year internship completed in her senior year of the bachelor degree.   Gabriella Settino joins the Business Law group. During her legal studies, Gabriella has volunteered for Pro Bono Students Canada as a researcher for a project about family law and as a vice-president for the organization’s McGill Chapter. She was also involved in health and wellness initiatives at the Faculty through her work with Healthy Legal Minds | Juristes en santé, where she was co-leading a project that provides peer-to-peer support to students in the faculty.   Clémence Trudeau joins the Conflict and Resolution group. During her law studies, Clémence became involved in various committees, including the sports law committee, where she organized several talks for her peers given by influential professionals in the field. She also participated in the Pierre-Basile-Mignault Moot Court Competition, where she ranked as the 8th best litigant in the competition. In addition, she participated in a clinic.

  9. Lexpert recognizes two partners as leading workers’ compensation lawyers in Quebec

    On February 10, 2021, Lexpert unveiled the identity of Québec’s leading lawyers in the field of workers’ compensation. Two Lavery partners, Guy Lavoie and Éric Thibaudeau, appear among the top lawyers in this area of practice. Guy Lavoie is a partner with the Labour and employment law group. His clients’ business concerns are always a priority when he proposes strategies and alternatives designed to resolve their problems. With over 30 years’ experience in labour relations, employment law, and occupational health and safety, he appears regularly before various administrative tribunals. He also works with the firm’s Business law group on the labour and employment law aspects of mergers and acquisitions. Éric Thibaudeau is a partner and a member of the Labour and Employment Group. He has special expertise in the area of occupational health and safety, regarding issues within the jurisdiction of the Administrative Labour Tribunal (ALT) as well as penal infractions prosecuted by the CNESST that are heard in the Court of Québec’s Criminal and Penal Division. He also acts for employers in grievance arbitrations, labour-relations matters and collective agreement decrees. In addition, he advises construction contractors and project owners on all matters within the jurisdiction of the construction industry regulatory authorities, such as the Commission de la construction du Québec and the Régie du bâtiment du Québec.
