Katia Opalka of Lavery speaks at Québec Mines about implications of the free trade agreement between Canada and the European Union
On November 19 in Quebec City, Katia Opalka, a partner at Lavery, gave a talk at a seminar on the mining sector in Scandinavia hosted by Export Québec as part of the Québec Mines conference. Ms. Opalka described the scope of the Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, the business opportunities it may present in the mining sector, and steps remaining before it takes effect. Patrick A. Molinari publishes a chapter in the collective work Droit et politiques de la santé
Patrick A. Molinari is the author of chapter 7, entitled Pratique médicale en établissement (Medical Practice in Institutions), in the collective work Droit et politiques de la santé (The Law and Health Policies) published recently by LexisNexis. In his chapter, Mr. Molinari offers up a detailed analysis of often-overlooked aspects of medical practice in health institutions. His analysis is twofold: he discusses how to gain access to practice in institutions and the terms thereof from the perspective of the obligations to which doctors are subject. The text will remain valid even after the current reform of the healthcare network is implemented.

Caroline Harnois of Lavery speaks on Family Mediation in the Context of Dual Nationality and Long Distance and publishes a Family Law Bulletin column
Ms. Caroline Harnois, a partner in Lavery’s Family Law, Personal Law and Estate Law team, has published a column in the Family Law Bulletin (Bulletin Droit de la Famille, Éditions Yvon Blais) on the Hague Convention of 1980 on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction. Ms. Harnois also spoke at a conference on Family Mediation in the Context of Dual Nationality and Long Distance (La médiation familiale dans un contexte de bi-nationalité et à distance) on November 7-8. The conference was organized by the AIFI (Association internationale francophone des intervenants auprès des familles séparées) and the COAMF (Comité des organismes accréditeurs en médiation familiale). Ms. Harnois’ presentation was given jointly with Ms. France Rémillard, Director of Central Authority for Quebec under the Hague Convention, at the Ministry of Justice. Ms. Jocelyne Dahan, a Family Mediator from France and Ms. Lorraine Filion, a social worker and Family mediator, also gave a presentation.

Marie Cossette of Lavery – Speaker at the CNNAR Annual Conference
On October 28, 2014, Marie Cossette, a partner at Lavery, gave a conference during the investigations within regulatory bodies portion of the CNNAR (Canadian Network of National Associations of Regulators) Annual Conference; representatives of member organizations from across Canada attended the conference. Ms. Cossette’s topic was regulatory investigator testimony and proper preparation for investigator cross-examination during disciplinary hearings. Marie Cossette of Lavery speaks at the Canadian Institute’s anticorruption conference
Marie Cossette was a session speaker at The Canadian Institute’s conference La lutte contre la corruption au Québec, au Canada, aux États-Unis et à l’étranger (Anticorruption in Quebec, Canada, the US and Abroad) held in Montreal on October 29th, 2014. During her presentation, Ms. Cossette discussed ways to identify red flags and tag risks depending on the business field, of the location where it carries out its activities and of the scope of its interaction with local government authorities. She also spoke about internal due diligence programs, the necessity to adapt when the risk potential changes and how best to evaluate situations where excessive compensation is demanded by third parties. Jean-Philippe Turgeon of Lavery – Speaker at the 4th Edition of the Conseil québécois de la franchise’s Symposium
Jean-Philippe Turgeon, a Partner at Lavery and leader of our Franchising and Distribution Section, spoke at the 4th Edition of the Conseil québécois de la franchise’s Symposium, on November 13, 2014. The symposium’s theme was “Best Practices and Recent Jurisprudence in Franchising” (« Meilleures pratiques et jurisprudence récente en franchise ») and was a great success. Louis Charette and Emil Vidrascu of Lavery speakers at Les journéés de l’ABQ on November 6
On November 6th, Messrs. Louis Charette and Emil Vidrascu, partners in Lavery’s Commercial Litigation group, gave conferences at the Journées de l’ABQ (Association Béton Québec). This conference doubled as technical training on granulates and on the responsibilities of concrete producers. Mr. Charette spoke about the ‘Responsibilities and Obligations of Concrete Producers’ (Responsabilités et obligations des producteurs de béton), while Mr. Vidrascu gave a conference on ‘Everything You Need To Know about the Competition Act’ (Tout sur la loi sur la concurrence). On November 7th in Montreal, Daniel Bouchard, Managing Partner of the Quebec City office of Lavery and partner specialized in municipal, environmental and administrative law, gave a conference at the invitation of the Chambre des notaires on the legal implications of the distinctions between ‘ditch’ and ‘stream’, particular in view of environmental law.
